ABOUT
What is PUYEY?
Founded in 2016.
PUYEY is a theatrical-performance unit led by Keiko Takano and Masumi Goto, based in Fukuoka and active across Japan. Rather than relying on spoken dialogue, the group uses rich auditory and visual expression to gently portray the quiet frustrations of living, creating works that feel like picture books for adults. At the same time, PUYEY embraces a strong experimental spirit beyond conventional theatre, developing projects such as interactive performances using LINE and exercise-style works like “Fairobics.”
The name “PUYEY” comes from the Thai word “PUY,” meaning dandelion fluff, combined with “EY!”, added as a burst of energy. It expresses the hope that, like dandelion seeds riding the wind, the company will drift to many places and bloom wherever they land. True to its name, PUYEY is structured as a touring-oriented unit — a concept shaped by Takano’s experience working tirelessly as producer of the Hita Theatre Festival, creating opportunities for encounters between local residents and artists.
PUYEY won the short-play battle “Geki-Totsu × 20min” hosted by the Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center, taking the championship titles for both 2022 and the 2023 Champion Tournament.
